Pelly River ferry opened the day before. In winter there is an ice crossing, with a capacity of 64 tons (!). During ice break up, there is no crossing for 3-4 weeks and no supplies to the northern communities. The Dempster Highway runs nearly 500 unpaved miles (800 km) from Klondike Highway near Dawson to Inuvik.
